Chiropractic for Peak Athletic Performance

Benefits Beyond just Injury Recovery

More and more athletes are turning to chiropractic to assist with their athletic performance. Not only professional athletes, but also weekend golfers, recreational tennis players, runners and gym-goers can all benefit from a healthy spine and nerve system.

Mils

Recovering from the impact of physical activity

Engaging in physical activities, whether it’s at a professional or social level, pushes your body and places strain on your joints and muscles. This isn’t a bad thing, but it does create an opportunity for joints of your spine and limbs to become misaligned, which would benefit from being checked by a chiropractor. Patients often report noticing faster recovery times after physical activity once under chiropractic care.

Injury Prevention

One of our body’s amazing protecting mechanisms is the ‘muscle stretch response’. When a muscle or tendon is in jeopardy of being over-stretched, like if you miss your step while running and hyperextend your knee, it reflexively contracts in an attempt to prevent injury. This mechanism, along with your hand-eye coordination, is controlled by your nervous system, which research has demonstrated is improved by chiropractic care.

Injury Recovery

Should an injury occur – whether you sprain a joint, strain a muscle or even break a bone, your joints need to be aligned and your nervous system needs to be functioning at its optimum in order for things to heal properly and promptly, so that you can get back to the sport or activity you enjoy faster.

Improve and Maintain Flexibility

If the joints of your spine and limbs are misaligned (or ‘subluxated’) then your flexibility will most likely be restricted. By restoring proper alignment and movement to the joints of your body, their range of motion can return to normal and the surrounding muscles can relax.

Improve Reaction Times

Our brain and nervous system are constantly receiving and processing information from our senses. If there’s any interference to the processing of the information (like if you’re subluxated), our reaction can be impeded or slowed. Imagine batting in cricket and being able to react to the ball coming more quickly, or imagine a boxer being able to more effectively see and react to punches coming – these types of reaction times have been shown to be improved by chiropractic adjustments.

Did you know?!

In 2009, a study which looked at the effects of chiropractic adjustments on golfers found that those in the four-week study who had received a chiropractic adjustment could hit the ball 8 metres further than before the adjustment. This was compared to only a half a metre improvement from the control group who only did stretches.(1)
